An exploration of texture - St. Mary's Wilderness (March 2011)

Butterfly on lichen-covered rock.

Feathery ferns.

Riffle.

Spiky cone on lined hand.

Moss amongst rocks and pine tags.

Flaky pine bark and cone.

Fuzzy yet prickly American Chestnut hulls. These trees have been greatly reduced due to the Chinese Chestnut Blight.

Carson's Stamp of Approval.

Hemlock needles.

Large Eastern Hemlock killed by the invasive, Woolly Adelgid.

Indian artifact. Not sure if it was a spear point, scraper or knife blade. Likely Monacan (Siouan) because we were within their traditional range.

Lichen on boulders.
